This final session will center on how we, as nonprofit professionals, can leverage our positions to advance trust-based philanthropy. We will explore strategies for engaging in meaningful discussions with donors and funders and fostering internal dialogues with colleagues. The goal is to ensure that we consistently incorporate participant voices in all aspects of our work, ultimately leading to more impactful and equitable outcomes. This session will offer insights, challenge existing norms, and reimagine our roles in fostering trust within the philanthropic ecosystem.

*All are welcome to join the conversation: whether you joined the first, second, and/or third session or not, this is a valuable chance to contribute and gain insights together.

Join us for a four-part conversation around trust-based philanthropy. In this third session, we’ll delve into an open dialogue that explores the traditional methods of collective giving within the non-profit sector. Recognizing our donors as partners, we’ll discuss how their engagement is instrumental in advancing or hindering our shared goals. We’ll share our experiences in fostering these crucial conversations and examine how we can leverage our collective power to break away from established practices. This session is an opportunity to exchange insights, redefine our collaborative roles, and cultivate trust within the philanthropic landscape.

Join us for a four-part conversation around trust-based philanthropy. This first session will be an open dialogue where we question the status quo of foundation grantmaking. As fundraisers, we’ll explore how centering the individuals we serve can lead to more impactful and equitable outcomes – and how foundations help or hinder those efforts. Let’s challenge norms, share insights, and reimagine roles in fostering trust within the philanthropic ecosystem.

Through this open conversation, we welcome participants to delve into the critical intersection of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within organizations and the imperative of promoting employee wellbeing.

Tema Okun defines white supremacy culture as the widespread ideology baked in the beliefs, values, norms and standards of our groups and our communities that teach use both overtly and covertly that whiteness holds value.  In her 1999 article, Okun outlined (some) characteristics of white supremacy culture.  Throughout her work, she urges us not to use this framework as a weapon but rather as a tool to help us understand the “water in which we are all swimming so that we can collaboratively work together to build and sustain cultures that help us thrive as communities and individuals.”

Whether you are just beginning to grapple with the ways that white supremacy culture has shaped our profession, or are seeking antidotes to overcome white supremacy in your organization, join us for this Courageous Conversation as we begin to follow her invitation to investigate how these characteristics and qualities lead to disconnection from each other and ourselves.

Research shows that burnout in the workplace – especially around DEI efforts – is higher than ever.  Low staff engagement can make us feel like we’re on this equity journey by ourselves.  Decreasing budgets can make even the simplest change feel impossible.  Combining those challenges with the increasing needs of the people many of our organizations serve and the unpaid labor that often accompanies implementing DEI efforts in the office and we’re headed toward a recipe for disaster.

Board diversification seems like an easy task to do. You simply invite people who don’t look like you, think like you, speak like you, and live like you to join your board, and voila – your board is diversified. Anyone who has tried to diversify their board knows it is not easy. You quickly find out that the people you hope will join your board don’t want to join your homogenous group. Diversification takes time, soul-searching, and difficult conversations. Unfortunately, many well-meaning people give up trying. Why do we want to diversify the board in the first place? Because when a group of people from different backgrounds who respect one another share a common mission creative power can be unleashed and take your organization to the next level and beyond. Join the next Courageous Conversation when we will take a deep dive and hopefully learn some ways to diversify our boards.
